Read the link by Henri Greuter, He examines everything in great detail. You may be right in that from then on, there was no return, but he also examines the effect of the earlier years when (Penske’s) Ilmore Chevy was the engine to have and there were not enought to go around.

The MB engine may have sealed the fate. But Greuter makes a good point that but George’s feeling of Rich team’s being haves, and the small teems being have not’s sowed the seeds several years before.

Yea, I’ve read the (extensive!) piece on Forix before (gosh, maybe 2008/2009?), and its great that he keeps revising it as people contribute more info. (One of the advantages of web publishing...)
Oh, and as for Tony George, I always got greed mixed with xenophobia in the way he spoke about the IRL’s creation.
